Of all my years on this earth, I don’t think I’ve been so excited for February as I have this year.
February is usually one of the dreaded months of the year because it’s a month where it feels like we’re heading to nowhere – winter is still here while spring weather would come some days before winter weather takes charge again. Mother Nature is such a tease.
It’s been so warm in the last few days that it got me bringing a majority of my seedlings outside. I even have a seedling that looks ready to plant. I might have started that seedling too early and as tempting as the weather may be, I know it would be crazy to start planting now. The Persephone period had just ended for my area, meaning there is now 10+ hours of daylight and the plants are waking up, but not yet.
I may wait a few weeks…
Anyway, not much happened in January. There was one snow storm and lots of freezing temperature. Compared to previous years, though, this January has been relatively mild. There hasn’t been much changes in the garden, other than the removal of the plants that could no longer withstand the low 20’s degree-Fahrenheit at night and decided to give up.
Most of the raised beds now only contains Red Russian Kale and Dwarf Blue Kale. I’ve started more kale, hoping to replace the existing kale once April hits and they bolt (flower). It’s an inevitable process but it will be good to start fresh.
I crocheted almost on a nightly basis in January. I did it sparingly in early 2025 because I was busy taking care of the seedlings but somehow, I haven’t had to do a lot of caring for the seedlings this year, so I had time to resume my winter hobby.

I tried out some new crochet techniques this year like tapestry and mosaic crochet while revisited a few old favorites like making a flower and bobbles. I even started to take up crochet stuffed animals – amigurumi. I completed the first project, which was making a stress ball. I love it. I love challenges like these, it’s like working a jigsaw puzzle – every stitch is a piece completed.
I see myself continuing to crochet into February, perhaps even into March. I’m not sure what is there to look forward to in February yet, other than it’s here and it’s one month closer to the start of gardening season. I can only hope that there’s an outdoor adventure somewhere in February. I guess we’ll see…

Nice patterns!

Hang in there with the planting. These are the kinds of years where there’s a hard freeze right after the plum trees blossom, and maybe even a soggy, but heavy snow in April.

Hopefully not, it happened last year as well and I lost all the fruits.
