#WeekendCoffeeShare – The Return of Winter

Happy Saturday!

Just like that, spring is gone and winter is back. Yesterday, when I stepped out of the house, I had to step right back in again. It was so chilly I needed an extra layer on top of my double layers of clothes.

Created with AI

There has been a freeze warning for the last 2 nights and that did quite a number on the PVC garden. It killed off most of the nasturtium despite having frost protection. Most of the newly sprouted potatoes died back. It damaged one of the grape vines, and possibly, it may had damaged a lot of the fruit on the trees. Thankfully, the vegetables all survived. Some did not look very happy of having to be conformed to a cone-shaped protector but looking sad is better than being dead.

I am usually prepared for frosts but because this frost happened so late, there was no way to predict what will be damaged and what won’t. As I’m writing this, it’s the second night of freezing temperature. It’s not supposed to be as low but I hope I won’t wake up to find something got killed.

At least both of the rain barrels got filled again by this week’s rainstorm, I guess there’s always something positive to come out of this badly timed freeze.

I had my annual review at work this week. Can you believe it? It’ll be 8 years in May I’ve been with the company, where had the time gone?

I felt the review had gone okay, it felt more like a chat with my boss than a lookback at what I’ve done at work over the last 12 months and what needs to improve. There was a lot of mention of AI, just because I had AI helped me write a bunch of computer codes in Excel to automate a couple of procedures at work. The automation only happened a few weeks ago but it seems like it’s the talk of the department. Honestly though, I only worked on the automations because of my upcoming trips. I did not want to go back to work after a trip to a humongous virtual pile of work waiting for me.

I guess as much as I want to reject AI from my life, I have been learning to embrace it because without the help of AI, there was no way I could’ve written those computer codes.

  1. Hard freeze here. Killed all of the Wisteria blooms, Plums, and Jasmine. I had to shut down and drain the irrigation system on the night of the 16th. I hadn’t planted anything yet, however. Fairly typical for this early of a spring around here. 😦

You have a good attitude about A.I. at work… as a tool rather than as a replacement for your own judgment. Unfortunately, we’re just coming into a generation entirely formed on and around technology. Few middle school kids have the hand-strength and fine-motor skill to properly hold a pencil and to write legibly anymore. The next group is also losing the mental focus to organize information or to make judgments.
