#WeekendCoffeeShare – A Mix Bag

Happy Saturday!

Today is the start of the July heat wave in my area. The temperature will soar to over 100-degrees in the next few days and I will probably be trapped in the house. About 90% of the garden is currently under shade cloth, even the blackberries because I’ve lost the crops to the heat wave in the last 2 summers and I don’t want to lose more to summer.

This week, I harvested most of the carrots and all of the red cabbages. I hope to plant some new cabbages in the next month but let’s hope the seedlings can get through the heat wave first. Other than a few of the sprouting broccolis, potatoes, and swiss chard, carrots and red cabbages were the last of the cold weather crops waiting to be harvest.

If you look at my garden right now, there are a lot of empty spaces. That’s because there’s not much I can plant and planting during a heat wave is typically not recommended as seeds will not germinate and there’s a great chance that it will not germinate even after it’s cooled off. With my trip to China coming up in September, I will need to push all my fall planting up to August, which might make things harder as it’s still quite hot then.

Everything seems to be struggling this year. The cucumber plants aren’t producing as vigorously as last year where I was harvesting 15 cucumbers per week. Perhaps it’s the wind? The low humidity? Weather in general?

If we were having coffee, I would tell you the most frustrating thing about this week was not having my words taken at its worth. At work, I replied to a customer’s email explaining why we cannot do what she wanted to do. She replied, contradicting my answer and then went to her sales representative who, in turn, wrote the same thing but in a more long-winded way. I was like, “that’s what I wrote.”

At home, I’ve been saying for weeks there’s something wrong with the air-conditioner (AC) and that she should have someone to come and take a look. Even when it’s on, the temperature in the house kept climbing. My mom didn’t believe me until a few nights ago when it was a little too uncomfortably hot for her. “Why didn’t you tell me there’s something wrong with the AC?” She said. Again, I’ve been saying for weeks.

I swear, sometimes, I do ask myself, “Am I invisible in this world? Do people look at my words as if they are feathers in the wind? Does my writing sound untrustworthy?”

I appreciate you reading and visiting. Have a great week ahead.

  1. Even though I’ve never met you, you are not invisible to me. I enjoy your writing and photos and definitely take in what you have to say. Sorry that those closest to us do not often listen.
