A-Z Challenge 2016: T for Try

George Addair

Well, I just had perhaps the most frustrating week ever. First of all, two weeks ago, I went online and checked my registration date and time for the Fall semester. It said April 19. So I waited until April 18 to check again to make sure I have the correct registration time in case I got the dates mixed up. I went into my account and instead of checking the registration time and date, I went to the class catalog and browsed the schedule, to make sure it had the classes I want to take in the fall.

They did and I noticed something really strange. One of the classes, supply chain management, was already full. How can it be full before the registration even begins? Maybe the school is going by alphabetical order here? Maybe the people with last names begin with the letter “A” goes first? I have the letter “Z” for my last name.

So I really went to check the registration date and time and instantly, my eyes grew enormous. April 11! I thought it was April 19! When did they change it? And without notifying me? A dozen questions flew through my head. I can specifically remember registration begins on April 19. How can it be April 11?

Anyway, I only got two classes added for the Fall semester. There were two other courses, supply chain management and strategic management that I still need to add. So Tuesday, April 19, after class, I went to see my adviser who sent me down the hall to the business administrator. I asked her to overwrite me and let me add the classes even though I haven’t technically satisfied the prerequisite for the strategic management class. The supply chain management class is one of the prerequisite.

She told me she can’t because I have supply chain first and I told her I’m going to take those two classes together. I’ve done before, take a course in conjunction with the prerequisite. Right then, she said, “I have never know anyone to do that before.”

Well, like the quote says, “Just because no one has ever it, doesn’t mean it’s impossible.” Nothing is impossible if we just try, right? So once again, I’ve come up with a quote from experience.

This was by far the most frustrating thing of the week because now I have to take supply chain during the summer if I can even get into that class. There’s a waiting list and I’m #7. It’s not a bad spot to be but it’s not a good spot either. If I can’t get in, I’ll have to delay graduation by a semester which already made me tick.

Anyway, let’s wrap this post with some music. When I hear the word, “Try,” I automatically think of this song.

“Just because it burns doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You gotta get up and try” – my favorite lines in the song.

  1. You’ve had a lot of obstacles to overcome in your quest for an education. When I read of your experiences I am reminded of the last line of one of my favorite poems… “…and each must make ‘ere time has flown,
a stumbling block or a stepping stone.” I see you using these experiences as stepping stones… keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks. I’ve been in school for more than 2 decades and confronted a lot of obstacles on the way and I do hope that this will be the last education-related obstacle I’m going to meet.
