I went to Bear Lake for the second time last week. I went this time with my mom and some friends. Our friend’s husband (the driver) navigated through Logan Canyon skillfully and quickly and before I knew it, we arrived at one of my favorite spots to take pictures. As I stood there, snapping pictures, my mom and friends asked me a question I had never thought of asking myself, “Why is the water at Bear Lake so blue?”
I shrugged. I’ve never been a big fan of science but that was interesting. I think I’ll Google it.
After snapping a few more photos, we got back into the car and headed for the beach. As soon as everyone started wandering around the beach, I began setting up my tripod, hoping to capture a few good long-exposure. Disappointingly, none of them came out as I had imagined.
So I decided to do some post-processing in Lightroom for the first time ever. The above (10-seconds exposure) photo looks much better after going through Lightroom.

Were the pictures this blue before you worked on them? Sky and water are beautiful.

The second picture was much too overexposed before I worked on it. I had to adjust the exposure level and the color balance to the color I saw with my eyes. Essentially though, the sky and water that day was really this blue.

I love Bear Lake. These are beautiful shots. From Scientific America: “The ocean looks blue because red, orange and yellow (long wavelength light) are absorbed more strongly by water than is blue (short wavelength light). So when white light from the sun enters the ocean, it is mostly the blue that gets returned. Same reason the sky is blue.” 🙂 Thanks for joining the challenge!

Thank you. I have been to Bear Lake twice now and both times, I felt as though I can stand there all day and still not get tired of the view. 🙂
