Sunday Poser #118 – Life’s influences

Do you think how we turn out is in our control?

Yes, actually I do think how turn out is in our control because we are ultimately an individual with unique thoughts and experience and not joined at the hip of another but as much as I want to say how we turn out is 100% in our control, I can’t. Parents, guardians, siblings, and other parental figures play a role, too, as well as, of course, genetics and environment. For example, some of us aren’t meant for school while some of us were abandoned during childhood and can develop abandonment issue or some kind of fear later in life.

My mom always tell her friends I’m a success (like an experiment) because I have her as a mother. Meanwhile my cousins aren’t successes in her eyes because their parents spoiled them as a child. They treated them like “little kings”, her words, not mine. I don’t think I’m a success because I have her as a mother. In fact, I don’t think I’m a success at all. I think I’m just another person in this great big world trying to work, pay bills, and live life to the best of my abilities.

Sure, I was partly influenced by her but I wouldn’t say how I turned out was because of her. I was also influenced by the situations dealt to me by life and others. I don’t think she should put herself on that high pedestal, after all, not all of my everyday decisions were made by her.

  1. I always think of the Johari window quadrants. Yep we did this one when I was a trainer. I think there is a lot of truth to it.
Open self – your public face
Blind self – things other people may see about you that you just can’t see
Hidden self – how you are that you don’t let others see
Unknown self ( I’m a bit sketchy on this one but I wonder if it would be finding yourself in an impossible situation and how you tackle it like a superhero)

  2. I agree my friend that we can change our lives with effort. To my mind you’re a successful woman who has done well in life. You own a house, have a good job and are looking after yourself and your mom. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
