Monday Peeves – Air Conditioner

Paula Light is the lovely hostess for The Monday Peeve, where I get to do the thing I cannot do in real life – air my inner most complaints.

This week, my complaint is about air conditioners. I have central AC at home but for some reason, it doesn’t come on after a certain hour at night. I don’t know whether it’s the thermostat’s fault or the system was set this way. It makes the house feel stuffy and the air thick.

We have been having a heat wave these last few weeks. Before we moved into the current house and before I started paying all the bills, mom would never turn on the AC during the summer. The house would be 90-degree-Fahrenheit before she would even consider. If I complained of the heat, she would give me this whole lecture about who’s paying the power bill and would implore me to “move into the basement,” where it’s full of spiders and it’s a comfortable 70-degrees.

This morning, she was complaining about being hot, sitting in the coolest part of the house. I took a peek at the thermostat and it was only 79-degree-Fahrenheit. I know, I know, some of you may bock at me saying “only.”

My rheumatologist once explained to that because of my lupus, I may suffer from Raynaud’s phenomenon, which means I tend to feel cool or cold when most people feel warm or hot. I don’t start feeling hot until it’s past around 82-degrees. So 79, to me, is nice. At the office, where it’s 72.5-degrees, I am freezing there and often feel the need to turn on the small heater by my feet or wear a jacket.

But, for mom, I must turn on the AC and endure the expensive power bill in the summer, right?

  1. When I saw how high my electric bill was at the beginning of this heat wave, I said, “you know what, I’m just gonna be hot.” But waiting until it’s 90 degrees in the house before turning on the AC is insane! 😂 I’m getting a headache just thinking about it 😭

    1. If I was alone, I would’ve just moved into the basement. My current basement is actually better than the one at the old place because it’s more finished, so less spiders. I would probably wait until 80 to turn on the AC but I agree, 90 is too hot.

  2. I am the same as you, cold right now in my 73 degree office. At home I keep the thermostat 77-80, depending on my mood. In winter I leave it at 67 and wear a lot of sweaters. The bill is sky high regardless 🤷🏼‍♀️

    1. And I think depending on the size of your house and the efficiency of the furnace, 67 can be either super warm for me or cool but I agree, the bill is still sky high either way.
