WQ#191: Winter

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Wednesday Quote. This week, Sadje is hosting with the topic of Winter.

This year, 2025, will be my 4th gardening season.

In the past, I would never take a break from gardening but in 2024, I actually got to take a break. Unlike prior years, I did not start seeds in November and December and I didn’t grow any vegetables indoors. Although I still did minor chores such as harvesting and adding water to the ollas in the raised bed, I didn’t sow any seeds nor force vegetables to grow.

I know, “force” feels like such a strong word but that was what I did in prior years, I gave the plants warmth and light but even with those things, the plants never grew in November and December. Everything seems to be dormant until after the new year. So I decided to be like plants and take an actual break during the winter.

But now, we’re almost at the end of January and with the day-length getting back to over 10-hours next week, I can’t help but start dreaming again as plants will start growing again.

I currently have almost 200 seedlings growing in my garage and hope to transplant some of those cold hardy vegetables starting next week. It won’t be in the open, of course, as we are experiencing freezing temperature every day and night. It will be under covers where it will be at least 10-degree-Fahrenheit warmer.
