Friday Fictioneers: The Room

Jason was walking down the hall, searching for the bathroom behind one of the closed doors in his future-mother-in-law’s house. Turning the knobs, he discovered all the doors were locked. Why, he wondered when he finally found a door that opened.

The second he stumbled into the room, he could hear high-pitched violin music playing as he came face-to-face with a shelf full of dollheads. Immediately, he backed out of the room and shut the door. Forget the bathroom, he thought as his fiancee, Tiffany, approached. “What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong?” Jason opened the door, Tiffany bursted into fits of laughter.

  1. That shelf full of dollheads would have sent me running too. You painted a very vivid picture in just a hundred words. I had to chuckle at Tiffany laughing at his reaction.
When Jason immediately backed out of the room, I actually thought about how easy it is to lose your balance when stepping backward in a hurry. When we get startled, our bodies naturally tense up and we tend to take stiff, flat-footed steps, which is a quick way to trip. Reaching back with the ball of the foot first and keeping the knees slightly soft can keep us steady when we are retreating from creepy dolls. This was a fun, spooky read for a Friday.

    1. Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed this. Yes, I did thought about him stumbling backwards and losing his balance. I just wish I come squeeze the words in there to convey what I was seeing in my head.
