Growing Up Visions of Adulthood

Daily Prompt: As a kid, you must have imagined what it was like to be an adult. Now that you’re a grownup (or becoming one), how far off was your idea of adult life?

As a child, I often imagined what it was like to be an adult, a grownup, someone who does not need to be told what to do. I would fantasize about typical things, you know like going to work in a pant suit, looking at watches to make sure I’m not late to anything, checking stocks, and perhaps coming home to a husband who loves me or a giant pile of bills waiting to be sorted out.

Now, 22 pushing 23 (in exactly 2 months), still living under my mother’s roof, have a degree and a job that seems to be going nowhere. I’m starting to wonder if I was given some sort of fault glimpse or hope when I was child because this is like a 180 of what I expected. But then, all my imaginings came from media (TV shows, movies…) that portrayed the perfect family.

Just like the movies and shows that portrayed typical school settings (bullies, unfair teachers, and lots of other awful things), the movies and shows about family were the same. I mean, what kind of parents snuggle in bed while their kids are watching a horror movie?

I have to admit though, I do have a small pile of bills waiting to be paid.

P.S. This was such an intriguing prompt that I just couldn’t pass it up. So let’s call this an encore to today’s post. 🙂
