Daily Prompt: The friendly, English-speaking extraterrestrial you run into outside your house is asking you to recommend the one book, movie, or song that explains what humans are all about. What do you pick?
I didn’t really want to write today. That fun little story about online dating was something I wrote two days ago. I am just exhausted. This morning, just barely after I publish that story, my mom dragged me to the other rental home to pull more weeds. My arms and legs were stung and bitten again by some mysteriously creature.
The only reason my mom spared me the afternoon was because I told her I had to work. So after a cold shower and some food, I went to work only to discover chaos. A cop was there. It turned out there was a phone theft in the plaza earlier this morning. It made me glad I didn’t go to work this morning. But I didn’t get to do much either, the shop was streaming with customers, one after another. I almost wanted to bolt out of there, go home and work on my novel or search for some freelancing jobs.
Oh, did I mention? I’m officially a freelancer! Just became one this morning. Reluctantly though. Not that I don’t want to, I just didn’t expect it to be so soon. I have to become one so soon mainly due to the fact that my mom’s getting laid-off again later this year and she wanted me to start supporting her. When she said it, it felt like a punch to the stomach because I have been paying for my everything in the recent two years. But honestly though, I doubt she’s really getting laid-off, she’s been saying that for the past 3 years, always at the beginning of summer. It’s starting to sound like the boy cried wolf.
Currently, I’m mainly focused on getting proofreading, grammar, and
editing gigs. Although, I’m not sure if there’ll be opportunities there for me because I went on the website and browsed and most of the jobs call for a “native” English speaker. Why do they care if I am a native English speaker? It’s not like I’m going to talk to them. They just need someone to edit their story, right? Someone who’s excellent in grammar and have a keen eye in detecting errors?
So, on that note, looks like I’m doom or at least temporary stuck. Actually I’m stuck anyways because everyday I go to the cellphone repair shop, hoping to complete the inventory adjustment and everyday, I can’t get a thing done. I feel like I’m just standing around all day waiting for my boss to finally focus on the tasks at hand instead of wandering around. (No offense, boss, by the way if you somehow stumble onto my site).
Anyway, back to the prompt, I didn’t start reading realistic fiction until recently when I discovered just how great it was. Before that, I mostly read YA mystery and supernatural fictions. So if this English-speaking E.T. ask me to recommend one book to explain what humans are all about, I would recommend E.T. to read “The Visibles” by Sara Shepard. It is a realistic fiction that chronicles the life of a girl name Summer.
I think it’s a great book and it shows that life isn’t perfect and that it’s full of ups and downs. Also, sometimes, ending are neither happy nor sad. It’s somewhere in the middle.

LOL! I would recommend “Animal Farm.” Hahaha!! So, are you really expected to support your mother?

🙂 I doubt it. I think she’s bluffing but it never hurts to have a backup. In case it’s like the boy who cries wolf way too many time, it becomes true.

Hopefully she won’t get laid off. Seems to me she has enough rentals to support herself without her job.

Well, the rentals aren’t paid-off yet so right now, she’s barely making enough from the rent to cover the mortgage. Let’s just hope it’s not for real this time. Crossing my fingers.
