The last thing I was expecting to find on my recent hike was cactus. Or all these aloe? I can never tell plants apart. I googled and these look a lot like cactus to me.
Still, it was the last place I would find plants like these to grow because something told me these plants prefer warm climates like the desert of Arizona or Southern Utah. But there they were, popping up all over the mountain.

So not a cactus then? And it does not look like a pear, what a strange name for a strange plant.

No, indeed it is a cactus! However, these grow EVERYWHERE ( not really) actually a LOT OF places you would not expect. Here in Kentucky I have seen prickly pear!
The “pear” is the edible fruit!! Still commonly eaten by people in the Southwestern US. Actually in supermarket grocery aisles!
I only know this because I grew up in Arizona.
Keep writing!!!
