Running her hand along his long neck, she sniffled. “I’m sorry, my friend, but I’m going to have let you go.” As though he understood her, he lowered his head to her height and she could see his eyes were welled with tears. “Aww, I know, my friend, I know.” Together, the two of them continued to walk the grassland, just a girl and her giraffe in the early light of the morning.
“I don’t get this story, grandma.” Michael complained. “Why did she have to leave her pet giraffe?”
“Yeah, why?” Stephanie chimed in. “Were they not friends?”
Resolutely, their grandmother stood up from the rocking chair and marched to the door. “Children, it’s just a story. There doesn’t need to be a why something happens in a story. It’s all made up. Now, it’s time to go to bed. Good night, my dears.” She turned off the light and closed the door.
Once away from her grandchildren’s bedroom, she sighed and felt her chest for the charm necklace. “Oh, how I miss you, my old friend.” She muttered as she rubbed the giraffe charm.
Aww, good stuff 💙
