#AtoZChallenge 2023 – Abell

Please note this is fiction!

I can’t decide which I hate more – first day of school or being a new kid in school. “A-bell?” Teachers butchers my name when they call attendance on the first day and it frustrates the heck out of me.

You know the weird part? They don’t ask me, “Is that how you say it?” but they will ask an Asian kid how to say their name.

What. The. Heck? Do I not matter?

In case you’re wondering, it’s pronounced Abel like Cain and Abel in the Bible. Yes, I read the Bible, perhaps I’m not as religious as my parents but I read.

I don’t know why there’s a double-L in my name. My mama and pops don’t remember what happened when they named me. Mama said she was ecstatic with joy while pops was nursing the broken hand she had caused during labor. They were clueless as to what they had written on my birth certificate, and someone didn’t stop them from making the biggest mistake of their life.

Parents, am I right?

    1. I happen to have a name I say wrong from time to time and having been a teacher, I think sometimes the mouth registers the enunciation of a name before the brain has a chance to correct it.

  1. My father’s last name was Meaux. His family was from France. When he was born in the US, someone decided that Meaux wasn’t a real name therefore his his birth certificate reads Moore.
He didn’t know this until he married my mother. Legally he was Moore. Therefore my last name is Moore and easier to pronounce.
I sympathies with the pronouncing of your name. Glad you have the courage to stand up for your name and identity.

    1. What a cool story! My name is directly translated from the Chinese phonetics, not many people know the little “Y” is a silent letter in Chinese, so they don’t know what to do with it. 😀 I sympathize with the character in my story as well.
