Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #256: Inspiration Found in the Kitchen

Happy Sunday! Ritva is the lovely guest-hostess for this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge and the topic she has chosen for week, I feel, is both interesting and challenging, and I hope I will do the theme justice – Inspiration Found in the Kitchen.

I must disappoint by start off saying I’m not at all inspired by the things in my own kitchen. With mom in charge, my kitchen has little attraction. Nearly 100% of our silverware and dishes were given by mom’s friends and all of them have uneven thickness. I hope you can see why her friends are getting rid of them.

Ever since I began gardening seriously in 2021, I have been inspired to create dishes using freshly-harvested ingredients like these carrots, which were harvested from my front yard garden and dice a few sweet banana peppers (also fresh from the garden) and there’s my breakfast. There’s nothing like a garden-to-table breakfast and there’s nothing compared to fresh veggies.

In my opinion, a kitchen does not have to be inside. It can be anywhere as long as food is being or can be cooked. With modern technology in the kitchen, it’s easy to control the heat setting when cooking. So I found it impressive when someone cooks in the old-fashioned way.

I remember watching these people stoke the fire and stir the content in the woks with giant spatula. These people start cooking this meal at 10 in the morning and guess when we ate – nearly 7 PM. That’s 9 hours of cooking.

My final inspiration in the kitchen is how people plate food. As you can see by my square-plate breakfast from above, my plating has always been subpar and often times, plating affects the taste of the food. Therefore, I hope you enjoy these images as I often look to these plating for inspiration when I cook.

  1. It all looks good to me! I agree there is something very special about home grown food. My mom’s veggies were so delicious! Nothing like tasteless grocery store tomatoes 🍅

  2. I am with you. I love to see beautifully plated food. Why it seems to taste better is beyond me, but I does. I love the photo of the outdoor woks. To think 9 hours, it better be good. Must have smelled good all day. And finally, I love the photo of the carrots in the sink. It is such a nice feeling to know we can grow our own veggies.

  3. Homegrown food! The very best you can get. Lovely take on this challenge, and I agree with you on almost every point. Outdoor kitchens are not that usual where I live because it is too cold, but food over open fire we do in the summers. Love your plates, I often buy beautiful plates and cups second hand or on auktions. I believe they made more beautiful plates in the old days.

    1. Thank you.
Absolutely, there’s nothing like homegrown food. Outdoor kitchens are rare where I live, too. The ones I’ve seen are typically temporary, set up during the summer for special occasions.
