Sunday Poser #156 – The Good Old Days

Do you think of your past as, ‘Good old days’?

No, I don’t think of my past as the “Good old days,” I think of a past as the “good old days.” That past was sure less complicated.

I was watching a news report a few nights ago about urging people to put out special color pumpkins to let parents know that a certain house is “allergy safe”, that parents won’t have worries letting their kids trick-or-treating for candies on Halloween. After seeing this report, I was shocked and perhaps a little surprised. We have to let people know the candy we put out for Halloween is allergen-free?

It seems like people are allergic to just about anything these days. In the report, this little boy is allergic to milk. The parents found out after feeding the boy some baby formula and he ended up in the hospital.

I often listen to food podcasts and a lot of the times, people would call into the podcast, asking for ingredient substitutions as they have someone who’s allergic to something in their household. There was this one call I heard one time, this woman was dealing with kids with egg, wheat, diary, and corn allergies. In my head, I kept thinking, since when are people allergic to everything? Even a decade ago, I don’t remember hearing about so much issues dealing with food allergies.

Anyway, the good old days, when I reflect upon those days, I think about the days before the pandemic, the days before social media, the days foods became ultra-processed and various preservatives being added to food to make it last longer. I like to think back to the days when food allergies only existed in the background and when people weren’t trying to kill each other with food.

      1. Yes, over here I’ve seen people developing gluten intolerance later in life and kids of a friend of mine had lactose intolerance too. But other than that, food allergies are rare here.

      2. If it were only that easy, over here, there’s been more food allergies than ever. Most of my neighbors have a lot of kids and I keep hearing them say their kids can’t eat this and that. Either they’re being over-protected or there’s something seriously wrong with the current generation.
