Her whole life, she thought she was this bad, selfish person. After all, she was being reminded everyday by her mother.
Stop being so selfish.
Stop making me angry.
Those words created a determination in her to fix herself, to repair whatever it was that was broken inside her. Be less bad and selfish became her mantra as she quietly chanted on all those nights when she hid behind the living room curtain watching her mother go through the stack of bills.
Now, almost 30 years later, she finally realized. “There was never anything to fix. I was never broken.”
