Monday Peeves – Crosswalks

Paula Light is the lovely hostess for The Monday Peeve, where I get to do the thing I cannot do in real life – air my inner most complaints.

My complaint today is all about crosswalks.

In the US, at least where I live, there are crosswalks for pedestrians to cross the road.

They are appropriately marked, too. I have been in London for one day and have noticed there’s a lack of crosswalks, or are there places in London where the crosswalks are not clearly marked? I would sometimes see dots on the road that might signify crosswalk. What the heck is that? That’s not universal.

I saw people running across the road when there’s no cars. Mom told me to do the same. I was hesitant on that. “I’ve come too far just to die like this.” I said because in the US, pedestrians gets the right of way. In the UK, it doesn’t look like the cars stop for people.

The only other place I know of where the pedestrian doesn’t have the right-of-way is China. You have strategically weave in and out of traffic to cross the road.

Oh boy, it’s going to be rough the next few days.

  1. Look for traffic lights that have symbols of red and green men……….. they are pedestrian crossings and not necessary marked with what is familiar to you. Hit the button and eventually the red light stops traffic, the little green man and a beeper come into play and you can cross safely.
Mind you, I haven’t been to London for over 25 years………………..

    1. London has changed. People crosses whenever and wherever they want these days. It’s scary. There’s only “zebra crossing” at certain streets. It reminds me of China where you have to pray before crossing the street that you don’t get in the path of a car.

    1. I am now seeing those at major street intersections but apparently, people don’t obey them here. They just cross whenever and wherever they want, just as long they make sure they don’t get hit by a car. London is a crazy town.
