Monday Peeves – That Dang Rooster

Paula Light is the lovely hostess for The Monday Peeve, where I get to do the thing I cannot do in real life – air my inner most complaints.

During my 2-week trip to the UK, one of my neighbors (I’m still trying to figure out who) had decided to raise a rooster. Driving around my neighborhood in the past, I’ve seen chickens in neighbor’s yards. Raising chickens in one’s backyard isn’t illegal here but there is a limit of 12 chickens.

Anyway, this rooster has been crowing from sun-up to sundown every day and I’m not talking about twice a day, oh no (if it was, you wouldn’t hear a peep from me about this), it crows every few minutes throughout the day. As if it isn’t bad enough I have planes flying over my head while I’m trying to phone customers, I have this dang rooster crowing, too.

Wait, is it normal for a rooster to crow so many times a day? Is there something going on? Is this normal behavior?

The worst part is I can only hear it in my bedroom, which is south-facing. Mom’s bedroom is north-facing, so she never hears it. She thinks I might be going crazy but I assured her I was not. One of these days, I will find out which neighbor is raising a rooster that crows intermittently through the day.

  2. When we were in the cottage, we had chickens, but no rooster and we wanted eggs, not chicks. Next door saved a rooster from the pot to keep their peacock company, and it crowed at all hours. It took us a while to find out who had it as we were going to complain, and when she said it was hers and we voiced our opinion, she said ‘What do you expect when you live in the country?’
    We were far from impressed with her attitude and penned a letter to the council, but never sent it. Everything went quiet a week later, and when we next saw her, we asked if she still had her rooster. She said she’d soon remembered why they didn’t have one as it kept her awake all hours. We said ‘What do you expect living in the country?’ Mr Rooster was farmed out and not put on the table, unless of course the new owner had other ideas.

    1. What a brilliant response. I wish I can use that, unfortunately, I don’t live in the country. 😀 Your comment gave me hope that maybe, just maybe, the constant crowing will drive the owner insane and that he/she will get rid of the rooster soon.

      1. Ah, if you don’t live in the country, there may be some local covenants about keeping chickens and or a rooster. We would like to keep chickens here, but aren’t allowed to because of such a covenant.
