Well, I’m not sure if my destiny was shaped but last week, I made the decision to continue school for one more semester after graduation, just one. I know I said for the past two months how I couldn’t wait to get a job and move out but by doing this, it’ll increase my odds of getting a higher paying job.
That’s why I have decided to go for a graduate certificate in information system and technology. It’s somewhat of a mini-Master degree in Information system. I don’t need to take the GMAT to get in and it cost less than a Master degree. So I guess in a way, it’s a win-win. Besides, I think it’s time for me to go for something I actually enjoy doing.
In the meantime, because I’ve somewhat turned my back on my mom, she’s now planning on my cousin’s future. She wants him to learn to fix airplanes or even pilot one. On the phone call to her sister, she says she doesn’t care whether he wants or not but her tones implied otherwise.
Me? I don’t think that’s what my cousin wants to do even though being a pilot does sound cool. I think it’s his decision to decide what he wants to do and no one else should make that decision for him. They’ll just make him miserable.

I think so too, even if I’m going against what my mom wants me to do. 🙂

It would appear to me that you are definitely shaping your own destiny… and you are to be congratulated for that. To borrow a phrase… “Just Do It!!!” (You’ll be glad you did…)

Sounds to me like you’re making a good choice if it’s something that really interests you. Personally, I think it’s usually a big mistake to major in something that you don’t really want to do, especially if money is the sole motivator. I know plenty of miserable people with great, well-paying careers. And apparently, you know at least one as well. I’d say the exceptions are when nothing interests a person (and money might provide access to an alternative), or when money is a primary interest. Despite the American mythology, “wealth” isn’t solely about “what’s in your wallet.” It’s also important to do things that come with their own rewards.

Well, I am quite interested in computer and I wanted to major in Information system but mom said no without even hearing me out. You’re right though, it’s a mistake to learn something when one is only motivated by money. Fortunately, money is not my primary motivator. It’s one of the things I like about this path but I’m also motivated by the lack of dull jobs, meaning my job will be interesting and situations will be ever changing and hopefully so will my life and also I’ll get to work with numbers and computers which was what I wanted to do from the beginning.

One’s future should not be decided by another. A person should freely choose what he/she wants to be in the future. Well, that’s how I look at it. Others may have a different opinon.

I agree completely. A person should be allowed to choose his/her future.

Influence one’s future, yes, but to totally interfere or even commandeer it, that’s unacceptable.
