Essay: Why isolate between two poles? Hire Ambiverts!

Here is the third speech I wrote for my public speaking and please note that this is a counter-persuasive speech in which I am against managers hiring introverts (no offense to all introverts out there, I’m one myself but that’s the assignment). Essay: Difference between Introvert and Extrovert

As my public speaking class draws to an end, I’ve decided to share the speeches I wrote for the class. Yesterday, I shared the last speech, today, I’ll share the first speech I wrote for the class. As you read, please keep in mind that this is an informative speech.

635511481591862041-1767377861_theodysseyintroDifference between Introvert and Extrovert

True or False? Introverts are quiet and shy, extroverts are wild. False. People who prefer introversion just tend to think before they speak while extroverts tend to speak before they think. However, with these two completely polar opposite personalities, don’t you wonder how they will get along in a group? First, though we have to define what really makes an introvert and extrovert, then we’ll compare and contrast the two personalities in a group and leadership setting.

What categorizes one as an introvert or an extrovert? Well, it depends. From the research of psychiatrist Carl Jung, introversion and extroversion refers to the origin of our energy or what energizes us and what drains our energy. However, contrary to popular beliefs, introverts are not quiet or shy, they are simply those who prefer to observe before they speak rather than the other way around. For example, when socializing with strangers, introverts tend to want to get to know the person better before sharing their inner thoughts and beliefs. Extroverts are the opposite of that. They are those who have no problem speaking to a large group of strangers. Basically, extroverts get their energy from being surrounded by people while introverts get their energy by focusing internally on thoughts, ideas, and reflection. What happens in a group setting, when introverts and extroverts are forced to communicate? According to senior organizational consultant at the University of Arizona, Mark Trommer, “it can be hard for people to communicate with one another if they have different styles.”

And now, we are going to compare and contrast between those different styles. First of all, you should know that the effectiveness of introverted and extroverted leadership is dependent upon the type of work structure. Under the leadership of an introvert, team members tend to be proactive. It is the team members’ duty to take the initiative in introducing changes and new ideas to the team. Therefore, experts believe that the performance of a team led by an introvert tends to perform better. On the other hand, under the leadership of an extrovert, team members tend to be dutifully followers looking for guidance. They do what they are told and their leader tends to feel threatened when a team member attempts to introduce a new idea to the team because it would mean the team member is stealing the spotlight. Let’s apply those characteristics to a real life experiment conducted by the University of Carolina.

This experiment was conducted by Adam Grant and David Hoffman and it is an experiment to test whether higher performance would come from passive employees as when being led by an extrovert or proactive employees as when being led by an introvert. The profits of 57 different stores of a single US pizza chain were compared over 7 weeks and it is according to whether the store manager is an extrovert or an introvert. The results show that the stores with extroverted managers earned 16% more profit than the stores led by an introverted leader while stores led by an introvert earn 14% less profit.

So there you have it, the quantitative analysis between extroverted and introverted leadership in a group setting. Just to recap, introverted leaders are most effective when the team members are proactive while extroverted leaders are most effective when the team members are passive, meaning they’re followers. Based on the experiment’s results, does this mean the company should only hire extroverts for manager positions? Does this proof extroverts make the best leaders? I guess we’ll find out.

Liebster Award Part 1

It’s been a while since I’ve accepted an award since I’ve been a little busy. However, since I was nominated by two awesome bloggers on the same day, I thought why not and the questions are quite interesting. Stay tune for part 2 later today.

June 2014

The following questions come from: Sandra Yeaman. Thank you Sandra. Go check out her excellent blog! Here are the rules:

  • Display an image of the award and write about your nomination.
  • Thank and link the person who nominated you for this award.
  • Answer the 11 questions prepared for you by the blogger who nominated you.
  • Reveal 11 random facts about the nominee. (See my 50 Facts page)
  • Nominate 5-11 awesome bloggers who you think deserve this award, and create 11 questions of your own for your nominees to answer.
  • List these guidelines in your blog post.

cover1. What book(s) are you reading now?

Dark Angel by L.J Smith. I’m almost through with that book. This is the 4th of 8 books from the Night World series. It is not a new series, it came out in the early or mid-90’s. So around my age. After this book, I’ll move on to the 5th book, Chosen.

2. Who else do you think would enjoy reading it? Why?

Anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy as well as supernatural. I enjoy this series because each book is a different story that is completely separate from the other books. So you can read the books in any order and you won’t be lost but of course, you’ll need to understand the basics of the supernatural world. Also, this series deals with a lot of different kind of supernatural creatures, some I wouldn’t even believe it belongs to this world.

3. Which author would you like to write your life story? Why?

Probably someone old and well-known like Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte because those ladies write with such wonderful descriptions and they can make anything sound like elegant.

4. Name three authors you would like to invite to dinner. Why?24529123_zpswkj77qil

Hmm, good question. I don’t know. When I read a book, I don’t typically focus on one author. I typically read a book based on its synopsis. So I don’t have a particular favorite author who I want to get know more about let alone three.

5. Summarize your life in three sentences.

I live a life full of chaos and boring adventures.

It’s always so busy and fast.

Sometimes, I wish I could seclude myself somewhere faraway with no technology and probably no food – just me in my solitude.

6. What was the last book you read that kept you up late into the night to finish?

16101128I had to look up this one. It’s been a while since I had a book that kept me up. After scouring my kindle, I arrived at This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp. It’s a short book and I just wanted to finish it.

7. Have you read a book recently you decided was a waste of time? If so, what is it? Who might like it?

I wouldn’t call this book (The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey) a waste of time. I put it down because it was making me sad. I mean, who makes a 7-year-old kid join the army? No one! I think people who likes post-apocalyptic fiction will like this one. I might continue reading it later.

8 What’s your favorite genre? Why?

Young-adult (YA) fiction is definitely my favorite genre. However, I don’t like all YA books. I mostly like the post-apocalyptic, fantasy, and supernatural sub-genre of young-adult fiction. I don’t know why. I just like them.

9. What genre haven’t you read much of yet?cover

Historical and romance fiction are two genres I haven’t touch a lot of. I like romance fiction but not too much because I tend to get a vivid image in my head while reading and you know the rest. I’m not sure why I haven’t touch much of historical fiction though, it sounds like an interest genre.

10. What would be a good title for your autobiography?

A Light in the Dark because it describes my sunshiny personality and I tend to write at night.

11. What’s the title of the next book you plan to begin reading?

I guess after finishing Dark Angel, I’ll move on to book #5 of Night World, The Chosen. I’m looking forward to reading what sort of supernatural creature will L.J. cook up in the next book.

If you could hire someone to help you, would it be with cleaning, cooking, or yard work?

If I can hire someone to help me, it would definitely be cleaning and yard work. I enjoy cooking, so having someone to cook for me would just make me feel miserable that they would have all the fun. Cleaning and yard work, that’ll be great. I hate getting on my hands and knees to clean the floors, pull the dirt out of the vacuum filter, and don’t get me started with pulling the weeds. Ugh.

What makes you laugh the most?

It’s easy to make me laugh, simply tickle me, that should do it. What makes me laugh the most though is when I watch physical comedy. I’m sure those would make anyone laugh.

What was your favorite food when you were a child?WU-0103_mac-and-cheese_s4x3

One of my favorite food when I was a child is Macaroni n’ Cheese and not the kind from the box. It’s the kind made from large soft elbow macaroni pasta with runny cheese. The only place I could get it was at school and that only became my favorite food after coming to the U.S. In China, I was consumed by the desire to get fast food that all other foods just became bland to me. Unfortunately though, I didn’t get a lot of fast food in China as you can read here.

Are you left or right handed? Right handed.

If you had only one TV, would you prefer the TV in the living room or another room?

I only have one TV and it is all the way down in the family room and I think that’s a good place because my room is very small.

A female road runner runs down a road at dusk at Independence Pass.Have you ever participated in a distance walking, swimming, running, or biking event? Tell your story.

Oh, have I? I’ve participated in a jump rope contest when I was in China. Not much a story there other than it was a huge embarrassment for me because even though everyone in school knew I didn’t know how to jump rope, they still made me and while everyone did 100+ repetition per minute, I only did six. I think the teacher was just a big bully to choose me for such competition.

I also participated in a 50 meter dash in middle school and although I was racing against the slowest person in school, I still lost because something happened at the last second which force me to slow down. It was the strangest thing. I began feeling dizzy, weak, and breathless. It was like I couldn’t breathe. I think it had something to do with my heart but I never found out. I just knew my heart had some minor problems back then. Let’s just say I was once again humiliated.

Wanting something to quench your thirst, what would you drink?

glass-water-on-moss-food-1-screensaver

Cool water (not ice cold but not room-temperature warm)  but if it’s very hot outside, I’ll take an ice water. Then, I’ll drink the water and rub the ice against my skin to keep cool.

What made you feel good this past week?

DSC00483

I finally made a trip to the Family History Library in Downtown Salt Lake and learned how to search for my family. I’ve been wanting to go to that place for a long long long time because I’ve been super curious about my genealogy and now that I’ve gone, I know how to continue with my search.

When you’re alone at home, do you wear shoes, socks, slippers, or go barefoot?

I’d always go barefoot, that is unless I’m on hard floor. Otherwise, on carpet, I’d be barefoot. I’m not really a fan of wearing shoes because I’m clumsy and wearing shoes would just increase my chances of tripping.

Would you rather live where it is always hot or always cold?

Uh, how about neither? I don’t like either of those extremes. I think somewhere in between would be just fine.

A-Z Challenge 2016 Theme

I didn’t know this is theme reveal day, otherwise, I’d be more prepared. Anyway, this will be my second year participating in the A-Z challenge and I signed up several months back. If you look at the sign-up page, I’m number 168, that should tell you just how long ago I signed up.

atoz-theme-reveal-2016 v2

Last year, I didn’t really had a theme even though I “claimed” I did. I just went with whatever I could think about that day. This year, however, I do have a theme and that theme is

Quotes!

Each day for 26 days, I will feature a quote. The topic or author of the quote will match to the letter of the day. For example, I for Inspiration. I got the idea from doing the 3 Day 3 Quote challenge and from last year’s participation. Beneath the quote, I’ll write something, maybe the quote is related to me somehow or maybe I’ll pose a question.

I hope you will enjoy the weekday quotes for the next month. Now the question is, can I keep up with this theme? Or will I go off to some random theme in the middle month like last year? Who knows?! I guess we’ll see.
