Train Rides

Sorry for the late post. Well, I guess it’s not that late. It’s not even noon yet but it will be by the time I post this. I’ve been studying and taking an exam all morning. Not the same one as the one on Saturday, it’s a different exam and I feel so much better now that I’m done with my exams for now. Man, I can really use a break but then again, I have class at the moment so I will just be quick.

It’s been a while since I’ve ridden a train. I have ridden plenty of trains especially since I’ve moved to Utah. For the five years during my undergraduate career, I rode the train to school every single day. Then I also rode the transit tracks train to the hospital ever since I’ve got braces. The longest train journey was the 15 hours train ride from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, California.

During that long slow train ride, I can remember cramp hallway and some very creepy travelers. I remember people piling their stuff in the aisles and I have to step over them again and again as I make my way to the observation car. I also remember brushing teeth in a tiny bathroom while getting jostled around as the wheels of the train galloped over the tracks. In a simple word, although it was fun visiting all the quaint little towns along the way, let’s just say it is quite unlikely I will travel by train to California anytime soon.

However, that doesn’t mean I’ve spent a lot of time in a train station. There are no train stations here, there’s only train platform and rarely does something happen there. So the only station I’ve ever been in was the Sacramento Train Station and I don’t even know the name of that. Therefore, the only stories that’s left to tell are those happened on the train. I think I will tell those another day. For today though, I think I will just settle with that short one above about my train ride to California. I may post something else later after lunch and homework.

Welcome to Boring Suburbia Life

Aside from the mall across the road, this is basically where everything is

I live in a suburban town about 30 minutes or 25 miles from the outskirts of Salt Lake City. I wouldn’t call it a town, really. It’s got 60,000 people and it’s busy and noisy as heck and the traffic can drive a person crazy especially on the weekend and everyone’s trying to get into the mall and we’re trying to get on the freeway. Yup, that’s right, we live right across the street from the mall.

We don’t go there though, at least my mom and I don’t. The clothes there are expensive and the sizes doesn’t really fit us. So on weekends, if we need to get onto the freeway, we take the longer route instead of waiting 20 minutes in traffic to get from our home to the freeway which is about 1.5 miles.

We used to live in Salt Lake County. I don’t say Salt Lake City because a lot of my Californian friends used to get confuse when I tell them I live in Holladay. Wait, I thought you live in Salt Lake City as I would often get in response.

No, I’d tell them, Salt Lake City is actually very small.

A lot of people visiting Utah for the first time, even my relatives, thought Salt Lake City is a large city but if you’ve lived here long enough, you will know that the city itself is quite small and it’s the county that’s large.

The train that used to get me part-way to school and home

Well, by my standards, anyway. The county is actually small compare to the other 28 counties in the state but it is surely the highest populated county in the state, about 1/2 of the state population is gathered there. Anyway, I don’t live in Salt Lake County, I used to, but I live in Davis County which is even smaller than Salt Lake County.

When I did my undergraduate at the University of Utah, whenever people asked me where I live, I’d tell them, Layton. They would be like, huh, where’s that? I was a little confused myself of why people don’t know where Layton was. So after a while, I started telling people I live about 30 minutes from the school but by train and bus, it’s about 1 hour. They were like, wow, you must be getting up early to get here everyday. I’d nod and say, yup.

I live in Utah for about 7 years now and I never really discover any strange quirks up until about 2 months ago when mom mention that she noticed the people here don’t pronounce the “t” sound except when they say “Utah”. I never noticed that and now I hear it everywhere. For example, I hear people call the city I live in “Lay on” when it’s supposed to pronounce “Layton” with the “t” sound. And when you need braces, people say you need to “straigh en” your teeth. Weird, right?

It’s okay, I guess, living here in the suburbs, though I find life a bit boring and annoying sometimes. There’s hardly anywhere to go and the only place I seem to know to shop is Hill Air Force Base. Now, with my ID card cut off, age restriction, I can no longer have access to the base and without a car, life has just become 100% times more boring. It’s almost like constantly being grounded. I can’t even go with mom to buy groceries now because I have to watch my cousin at home.

F.Y.I, mom nor I want to take my cousin to the market because he has a reputation, even at 17, to throw a tantrum if we don’t get him what he wants and frankly, I am terrified.

The different side of me

This morning I woke up and went straight to work. This month’s pile of work is enormous. If I don’t complete by the end of the month, I won’t receive a paycheck and that is bad. Anyway, I just got to school and have a few minutes to breathe before my class starts. So I thought I would give the daily prompt a go.

I actually gave the prompt a gander earlier this morning and I was like what the heck does this quote mean. “Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.” — Allen Ginsberg

Well, after a quick search on google, I found this meaning on chacha.com.The phrase follow your inner moonlight don’t hide your madness means to be yourself and love who you are and don’t be afraid to show others the real you out of fear that they won’t accept you.

There are two sides to me, childish and sophisticated. I usually show my sophisticated side but the truth is I am just another big kids and being smart and sophisticated sucks. On the other hand, I would never show my childish side to others because that’s the side that will drive people away.

Being sophisticated sucks, yes I know I said that but this is the side people like . The part that suck is being smart and calculated. It is extremely exhausted sometimes. Don’t you think so? It’s almost like taking tests all day.

I like who I am but until I am truly comfortable, I am keeping my childish side in hibernation for now.

Give me Ten Minutes – A Little Life Update

I haven’t been feeling well this week. 😦 The temperature fluctuations tend to do this to me. Over the weekend, it went from the 80’s to the 50’s. The temperature difference in the classrooms doesn’t help either. So I have chills, headache, and my dizziness.

Yet I don’t tell anyone. No one will believe me plus I don’t have insurance. I don’t even bother talking to mom anymore because her temper had been at its worst ever since my aunt and cousin came to town. Yesterday, after enduring 2 hours of exam and not eating lunch, I went home straight to fighting. Frankly, my throat is coarse and tired.

What did we fought about? Two days ago, she had asked my aunt to re-park her new car and my aunt backed the car into the pole that held the basketball basket. She did what my boss did last November to my car. She turned the wheel in the wrong direction. So naturally, she blamed me for not stopping my aunt. Can you believe that? If I’d known that, I would have re-parked the damn car myself.

Then last night, after she found out how I did on my exam (I stupidly blurted out), she wouldn’t leave me alone and the fight went on for 90 minutes (storming into my room and interrupting me doing homework and all that). It’s so freaking annoying. I feel like the fights are going to go on and on probably until one of us dies or move out.

The other thing that is annoying me at the moment is ever since my aunt and cousin moved in, they’ve been eating, eating, and more eating. It feels like that’s all my cousin think about is food. In less than a month, they have eaten the amount of food that would normally take me and my mom two months to eat. I’m serious and I mean just my aunt and cousin. It doesn’t include me and my mom.

My cousin eats like there’s no tomorrow, like everything is free. Well, nothing is free. There’s no free lunch. He cooks three dishes for lunch and eat most of it himself and then 30 minutes later, snack and then 2 hours later, three or four dishes again, dinner and the cycle continues. Okay, I am at awe here because I have never seen a 17-year-old with such a large appetite. And the thing is, he doesn’t gain weight. Okay, now there’s something wrong with that kid.

Okay, my 10-minutes is up. I don’t really need prompt today but they are part of the fun for my day.

I’ve been super busy with school this week. If you leave a comment, I may not reply right away. Be patient, I will try to get to you as soon as I can find the time to sit.

Think before Be

Today’s prompt asks, To be, to have, to think, to move — which of these verbs is the one you feel most connected to? Or is there another verb that characterizes you better?

To think, that definitely characterize me. Although sometimes, I should just be because I tend to over-think the simplest of situation and end up with consequences.

I think the person that’s at fault for this characteristic might be my mom. At the age of five, she began sending me to chess lessons. Apparently, chess is a popular game that most parents send their five or six year old kid for lessons, maybe to see if they’ve got a prodigy.

Oh my gosh, I still remember those lessons. The instructor spent the first night handing us all a yay-size book that had the basic moves and all the tricks and then we paired up and play while the parents stood against the wall and watched. I don’t remember mom being there but I sure do remember that it was her that dropped me off and picked me up each night.

With that book, you can imagine everyone in that class knew all the tricks. I did too except I can’t apply it because my opponent would see it coming from a mile away. Anyway, I sucked at chess. Even now I suck. I can’t even beat my own self at the game. But a few classes later, I figured out how the other kids got so good. I saw their eyes move all over the chess board, determining their next move and the move after that. I started doing that too but it didn’t work. I still lost. Eventually, mom gave up sending me to lessons.

I used to be a “to be” person but after those chess lessons, it changed me forever. It’s morphed me into a “to think” person. Now, like a chess game, I would think and analyze every situation before acting, not that it’s bad thing but I just wish that I can just do what my instinct tells me and not think about the consequences.

If I have a vial of truth serum…

Today’s daily prompt states: You’ve come into possession of one vial of truth serum. Who would you give it to (with the person’s consent, of course) — and what questions would you ask?

Hmm, which poor soul would I use the truth serum on?

You know, I am a curious person yet I seldom ask questions. I believe that is because sometimes asking too much questions drive a person crazy and I hate making people feel bad. Hmm, is that why I let my smart-mouth cousin say things about over and over? Is that why I cannot get him to shut up?

Anyway, if I have a vial of truth serum, I probably would keep it and never use it. But let’s say hypothetically that I do use it. I can interrogate anyone I want, three people come to mind but the question is what do I ask them?

Assuming my curiosity have driven me insane and I finally decide to use my secret weapon, truth serum, the two people I would use it on would be my grandparents. By then, I probably won’t even ask for their consent before injecting them both with half of dose of the truth serum. I don’t want to be cruel but I’m afraid if I use the truth serum on them, I am more than desperate. Either way, I will get the answer that’s been bugging me for most of my life.

If I don’t use the truth serum on my grandparents to get some deserving answers, I would otherwise use it for curiosity and the person I would use it on is my first crush. The story is we sort of fell in like with each other in freshman high school but he never told me he likes me. However, right before I moved to Texas, his sister told me that he likes me but if he did like me, wouldn’t he tell me that himself? So it makes me feel suspicious about the truth.

Of course, I would ask him for consent because he isn’t my grandparents and I have a feeling he would consent because he is a little shy and is probably afraid to tell the truth without truth serum. So the questions I would ask him are:

  • Did you have a crush on me in high school, before I moved to Texas?
  • Why did you have your sister tell me instead of telling me yourself?

Unless, someone else is keeping something from me, these are the three individuals I would ever use the truth serum on.

Fiction or Non-Fiction

tkLOe7nnQ7mnMsiuijBy_hmSince I got my kindle reader less than three years ago, I have read close to 100 books. That is a lot by my standards. I can tell you that ALL of them are fiction.

I love reading about history. It makes my imagination go wild but if I’m going to read about history, why not read the dramatic take of a specific event? It would involve love, death, and all that stuff that would make me jealous and sad. Besides, if I want to read about facts, wouldn’t I just turn to a history book?

I also choose to read fiction because many of those literary fictions that were written long ago like pre-20th century, those novels often depict the lifestyle back then and I like to compare then and now. Like the inventions and I also like to marvel at the simplicity of life. No phones, computers, and all the electronic gadgets that have caused us to sit more stand or walk.

Anyway, there may be a lot of great non-fiction books out there that’s crying for my attention but I think I’ll stick to fiction for now.

I know this post is random and all but I hope if I have time, I may post something else later today. For now though, I have to go to school.

Too Much Too Little

ednaferber382367Today’s Daily Prompt reads: “Perhaps too much of everything is as bad as too little.” – Edna Ferber Do you agree with this statement on excess?

Yes, actually, I do agree with this statement. Some things are just perfect in the middle. Take baking, for example. If you have a cake with either too much salt or sugar, the cake won’t taste right.

It’s similar to my situation now. Late last night, mom has decided to 100% transfer the car to my aunt who is going to pay it off completely. Today, there’s a guy coming to look at my old car, less than two days after I post an ad to sell it for $2000. If the guy decides to buy my car, I will truly be car-less and you have no idea how horrible it feels because that means I can’t go anywhere. I live in a town where everything is spread out. There’s an enormous need for a car because without a car, I can’t go anywhere.

Anyway, back to the prompt. Mom told me I need to get a car for myself. Even though a used car is just in my price range, it’s out of the question because they won’t let me. It has to be a new car. Here’s where the statement on excess comes in. Mom wants me to buy an All-wheel drive so I’ll be safer on snow and icy roads but those come with a large price tag.

Well, I’m just driving to school and back, 30 miles round trip max daily. Do I really need to get such a pricey car? It’s not like I’m going to go up the mountain or somewhere with high elevation. On the other hand, I did some research on low-price car ($12000- 13000) and well those cars have other worries, wind. I pass through the mouth of a canyon everyday on my way to school and it’s often the windiest spot of the whole drive.

I have driven my mom’s car and it swayed uncontrollably like a piece of paper. That’s what I’m worried about with those cars. I guess I should probably go for the middle price, not the ridiculous price on the new car mom bought yesterday yet not as low as the tiny hatchbacks that might get me scared of the wind. Maybe I should just settle in the $15000 to $19000 price range because too large of a price will cause me a headache and too small of a price will make me run away from driving.

Tests of Friendship

I am so excited this morning! I have made it through one year of blogging. Yeah, I didn’t post consistently until the summer but I did post once in a while whenever I’m inspired. It’s been a fun journey to watch this little blog of mine grow and thanks to all of you who took the time to read and like my posts. Let’s go for another year!

Anyway, enough of my babbling, today’s prompt reads: If you had to come up with one question, the answer to which would determine whether or not you could be friends with a person you’ve just met, what would it be? What would the right answer be?

Honestly, I don’t ask myself questions like that. If someone comes up to me and wants to be my friend, I will be so grateful. I would literally be friends with anyone. Then if that either one of us are not fit to be friends. Then we just slowly drift apart. For some reason, it always worked for me. Rarely will the friendship become something of a frenemy except that time.

I was in middle school. I know, I keep referencing back to middle school. I was in P.E. class and there was this new girl. She had gray-blue eyes and tan skin. Her name was Angel except she was no angel. She approached me and immediately seemed to want to be my friend. I was so happy because how often is there someone who comes up to me and wants to be my friend?

We had so much fun during class but unfortunately, that was the only class we had in common. The next day in PE, I’m not sure what happened but Angel had befriended with some of the other students and began teasing and making fun of me. I was like what the heck?! What happened overnight? I’ve never talked to her again as she was like everyone else who like to make people (i.e me) feel bad.

Although I don’t ask myself any sort of question, I do tests. If this person and I are still friends after a day, I will go for a week. Then I would go by a weekly basis. Also, if this person makes fun of me in front of others, if I’m there and it’s just light teasing and I’m laughing along, then yes, I would probably still be friends with this person.

However, if they are anything like my so-call friends in middle school who say bad things about me behind my back, I will ask why and then judge their answer to see whether or not I will still be friends with this person. There’s more, it goes on and on. Ultimately, it’s like there’s an algorithm in my head.

Thanks for your time

In several occasions during the past few years, I have been placed in a room full of strangers, mostly students I don’t know. Most of the times, they would ask me about my story but none of the times, they would give me the full allotted time to do. I mean, at least give me 2 minutes. I would’ve been grateful for four but come on, they would had lost their attention by then. After all, they are teenagers, they have a shorter attention span during adults.

In those occasions when I am placed in a classroom full of bratty hormonal teenagers who think life is all about shopping for brand-names like my cousin. He won’t wear anything that’s not a famous brand-name like Nike or Calvin Klein. That’s why we had to go to the Outlet Mall on Saturday, to get some brand-name clothing for him. Same with the ones I used to deal with at a time when people barely classified me as an adult.

Anyway, I am usually only given about 30 seconds to a minute to introduce myself before those people realize they don’t need to take me seriously. I can never figure out why until I looked myself in the mirror and realized I wasn’t intimidating enough. Clearly, you need to have an intimidating face to be a teacher and if you don’t, well, let’s just say you will come home screaming everyday crying out “Why!”

Anyway, at the start of the class, I would say something like, “I am Yinglan and you will be learning ESL from me.”

Then someone would raise their hand, “What is ESL?”

“English-as-a-Second-Language.”

“Anyway, I will be teaching you the basis of English starting with grammar and vocabulary.” Then I’d pass out the disclosure statement, all the teachers does it, that states my rules. I’d read each rule aloud, then have them sign it. Just like that, strict town and anxiety was over. They began talking and not listening to me.

They must have sensed something about me that I couldn’t sense myself. They have decided to not take me seriously. That’s why I like blogging by the way, people here don’t know who I am, they don’t know what I sound like. I am just another normal-ish person. If I was given a chance to be in a room full of stranger that would give me 4 minutes of their undivided attention, I would be able to tell from life story and by that, I mean, the slightly extended version of “About me“.

Eye of the Beholder

You know, I have to agree with Martha here. These do you agree/disagree prompts are kind of uninspiring. They don’t really inspire me to write anything. This morning after my aunt called me at 5:52 am to tell me she got onto the flight at Seoul and asks me to check whether it will arrive at LAX on time this afternoon. Anyway, after I checked, I took a look at the Daily Prompt, a minute after it went live at 6 am sharp.

I was like what? Again with the agree/disagree questions? What are they trying to do, make me write a one-sentence answer? So I went back to bed and let the prompt brew in my head like a steaming cup of coffee. So now, 2.5 hours later, I’m awake and here we go.

Today’s daily prompt asks: We’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Do you agree? is all beauty contingent on a subjective point of view?

I am neutral on this one. This means, I agree and disagree. It all depends. Everyone’s beauty is different. Some are on the outside and some are on the inside. Like the prompt says, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If everyone sees beauty the same way, everyone would be in love with each other.

However, some beauty are contingent on a subjective point of view. Ah, I can’t think of an example here but some are. And that’s all I can say about this topic. Please come up with some creative prompts. I don’t really like to analyze things and I can’t write any sort of story with these prompts or is it just me.

Anyway, I ran into a little snag just 5 minutes ago. Mom forgot to give me back my parking permit. I have to leave early to get cash to park in the pay lot today. That means I am going to have to miss my Beta Alpha Psi meeting today. Darn my forgetful brain. Please let there be parking in that pay lot.

A voice in my head

(Yawn) I am so tired today. At least I get to skip my second class at mom’s request. 🙂 She doesn’t want to wait at the airport. So I am rushing over right after my first class to pick her up. Yay me! Anyway, today’s daily prompt is a good one. It read:

Your blog is about to be recorded into an audiobook. If you could choose anyone — from your grandma to Samuel L. Jackson — to narrate your posts, who would it be?

Every post I’ve written, when I was writing, I listened to this narrative voice in my head. It’s almost like it’s talking to me, telling me what to write. It doesn’t sound like me either. I mean, it is me but a much more mature and normal voice than my own. Trust me, if you ever hear my voice on the phone or whatever, you would think it’s a child speaking.

If my blog is ever going to be recorded into an audiobook, I would choose one of those people who does the narratives for the documentaries about deceased authors. What? You ask. I know, you’re confused but that is somewhat what the voice in my head sounds like, the people that does the narratives on those shows. Like a few weeks ago, I watched American Masters on PBS, it was doing a documentary on that author that wrote “Gone with the Wind”, oh, I can’t bring up her name at the moment.

Anyway, there’s a female narrator that I assume sounded like the author, read snips of the book. It sounded like an emotional robot sometimes but at the same time, it had this sad sound to it that makes it feel like it’s reading the book like a diary. That is kind of what my blog is, a diary. So if my posts is ever going to be recorded, that’s the kind of voice I want.

Oh gosh, late for school, later! 🙂

Meaningful Hand-me-downs

I am no stranger to hand-me-downs but then again who is, unless you’re incredibly rich but even then, you will have something that is sort of a hand-me-down. Mom and I almost escaped to Salt Lake City from Austin with just the things that can fit into her small car (long story, will/might tell later). So we didn’t have a lot when we came here but not to the point that we had to start over.

We moved into an one-bedroom apartment a few weeks after we arrived. We had no furniture. For the first few days, we sat on a towel on the carpet while eating from some spare bowls lend to us by mom’s nosy friend who lived several blocks away.

That first weekend, when her nosy friend’s husband was off, he helped move  all the furniture that’s been occupying his garage into our apartment. They were eager to get rid of it even though some of it were still pretty much brand new. It belonged to Mrs. Nosy’s uncle who decided to leave Utah and move back to San Francisco.

The apartment was soon furnished with second-hand furniture. An out-of-date flowery pattern love seat in the living room while a really weird texture Laz-Boy sofa-bed in the bedroom where mom and I will sleep for the next two years. Then a folded table and very heavy chairs for dining, a rectangular broken-legged mirror-glass coffee table as well as a square table for the hand-me-down TV and some shelves. Even the silverware were hand-me-downs.

The Laz-boy sofa bed and the square coffee table that used to hold the TV. See what I mean about the mirror-glass?
The Laz-boy sofa bed and the square coffee table that used to hold the TV. See what I mean about the mirror-glass?
The love-seat. Don't be fool by the length, there are only two cushions.
The love-seat. Don’t be fool by the length, there are only two cushions.

But I was thankful because we were struggling back then. Mom’s new job as a school teacher hadn’t begin so we didn’t have any income and I was only 16. Anyway, 100% of the things in that apartment were hand-me-downs.

A block away from the apartment was a thrift shop and that was where we would shop until we moved to our current home 30 miles away. Mrs. Nosy loved this thrift shop because a lot of wealthy old people lived nearby and their homes are full of beautiful antiquities. As well as that, a lot of the clothes that were donated were pretty clean and new. I didn’t like shopping in that store at first because I thought second-hand clothes were yucky. But I adjusted after a while and knew where to look.

We got quite a deal in that store, most of the clothes we bought were $1 and some of them were free. Anyway, when we moved into our current home, again, we were nearly furniture-less because when you move from a 500 square-foot apartment to a 2000 square-house, it will make a difference. We had no beds. So for the first week or so, we slept on the sofa bed which now resides in the family room. Then the love seat now resides in the living room. We rarely shop at the thrift shop now because we often find better deals at the Exchange in the air force base.

Out of all the hand-me-downs I had in my life and I have had a lot, there three items I think it’s the most meaningful.

  1. The television-set that was giving to us by my step-grandparents when we moved to Austin. We were just about broke back then with my step-dad spending every dime my mom made from her two jobs on alcohol and cigarettes. This television-set provided entertainment and comfort for me because at least for a short time, I can forget I live in tiny apartment with constant fighting parents.
  2. The sofa-bed that was handed down by Mrs. Nosy’s uncle. It provided me with a place to sleep. Not comfortable but it’s better than sleeping on the ground.
  3. The television also handed-down by Mrs. Nosy’s uncle. It provided mom and me hours of entertainment while we spent many late-nights during that first year staying up grading paper.

I know my definition of “meaningful” is different than everyone else’s but these three things got me through some tough times. Isn’t that’s what the term “meaningful” is about? Getting through memorable hard times? Anyway, when I listen to this song, it kind of remind me of those times.

Just writing this post makes me feel older already. Today is my lunar birthday. I may be turning 23 in a few weeks but I bet my aunt will send me a card today saying happy 24th because some people in China go by the lunar birthdays and count the 9 months in the mother’s belly.

My Own Show

I hate picking favorites of anything. I guess because I don’t like hurting people’s feelings. But secretly, I enjoy it. I just don’t like pick in front of people. But sometimes, I don’t really have favorites. Like shows and movies, if you’d ask me to pick a favorite, well that’s one question I cannot answer. Gee, I can’t remember what I watched.

Today’s prompt asks,

You’ve just been named the casting director of your favorite television show (or movie franchise). The catch: you must replace the entire cast — with your friends and family. Who gets which role?

I will tell you one thing, my family is out. I don’t care how much they want stardom, they would not in a lifetime be in anything where I am the casting director. Neither would my dad’s family because if I bring either family into a room, there would be arguing with somebody. With both sides of my family in the same, a war of two tribes would instantly brew.

Hey that could be a show. No no no, not when I am running the show!

If I can make up my own little show, the genre would be dramedy and it would feature my former best friend, Cindy, playing somewhat of the popular girl slash frienemy  to a foolish naive girl and then when that girl recovers and gains popularity, she’d dump her and instantly becomes her rival.

Okay, maybe if it’s a dramedy, it might feature my mom playing the annoying nagging ill-temper mother to that naive lonesome girl but that’s it. NO more family. Then the show or movie or whatever would be titled The Life or Diary of… of that naive girl’s name.

Well that’s it of my rambling. Have a great day and later. 🙂

Can’t stop humming!

The latest song I heard was on the radio a few days ago. Now, I cannot get it out of my head. I keep humming the beginning of the song but when I get to the chorus, I couldn’t continue. It’s always the beginning.

The song is:

That opening line, we’re a thousand miles from comfort, we have traveled land and sea, just spoke to me in a way. First of all, in the most recent weeks, the planes (F-16) have been flying more frequent and it picks the perfect time to fly over my home, right when I am watching something or trying to write. So you can say I am a thousand miles from comfort because I haven’t been comfortable at home this whole summer. Nor was I comfortable at school because 20 miles away, those same planes are still flying above me. No matter where I go, that buzzing sound will follow just to annoy the crap out of me.

That second part, we have traveled land and sea, well, I guess you can describe the planes since the Great Salt Lake is large enough to call “sea”. They fly all over the land and the sea. On the other hand, it can also describe my willingness to find comfort because at this point, I do not care what I try or do, I just want these planes to stop rumbling in my ears.

I guess this post sort of turned into yet another one of my little rants. Well, I need to complain once in a while. 🙂

The book I want to re-read

71A4KWHZm8LPhew, I’m swamped with novels to read thanks to all the wonderful recommendation from the various blogs I’ve visit. I recently read “The Visibles” by Sara Shepard. It was a great novel that I couldn’t put down once I got started. Now, I’m reading “Everything We Ever Wanted” also by Sara Shepard. I don’t know what to think yet seeing that I’m only on chapter 3.

However, if I have enough free time and I have read all the popular novels, the book that I would definitely like to re-read is The Ends of the Earth by Robert Kaplan. I bought this book I think three years ago when I took Middle East Geography, interesting but difficult course, by the way. It was our required textbook but I never read it because it was during my “I hate reading days” and it was so boring.

I still have no idea how I passed that class. But I eventually did read the ending and I thought it was okay. So I like to read it from the beginning.

Another reason I want to re-read this book is because it has something to do with travel and traveling is somehow my current obsession. I remember reading the summary and it said it’s about the author traveling from the Middle East to Asia. I just read the part where he talked about the scary journey riding on a bus from Pakistan entering China. There, he had to go through that horrifying narrow and rickety highway which I have forgotten the name.

Anyway, if I have the time, I would definitely read this book from the beginning just to read about the adventure through Africa, Middle East, and Asia. Unfortunately, it probably won’t be anytime soon seeing that school’s starting again in 8 days 😦 and that’s the end of my summer.

Well, that’s it for now! Have a great day! 🙂

The Darkest Month

2456613184_7165eb4bb3_oIn that single moment, my life changed forever. How could you do this to me? To yourself? You promised to take care of yourself while I was gone. Now, five days after Christmas and here I am, standing in the cold with a bunch of people I have never met while you just lay there with your hands fold across your chest.

December is supposed to be a month to cheer, not mourn or grieve. Now, each time I hear a cheerful Christmas song, it would be a reminder of the darkest month of my life. As the pastor spoke, I felt my hands inching toward Aunt Jade on my left and Aunt Liz on my right, both whom, like me stand here for the same reason, to mourn a love one.

I could have never thought that less than a month ago, I was counting down the days until the end of finals and the beginning of winter break when I would go skiing with my friends. I called you right before finals week and told you my plans for winter break. I thought you’d be disappointed that I wasn’t coming home for Christmas but you sounded glad. You told me that it was time for me to go have fun and act my age for once. I was so relieved to hear that.

Five minutes after our call, my phone rang. I thought you had forgotten to tell me something but it was Aunt Liz. Her voice sounded panicky and slightly distraught. “It’s Henry, they just took him to the hospital.”

“The hospital? W-what happened?” I quickly asked. I could feel my hand shaking.

It sounded like Liz’s lips were quivering. That’s not like her. She was usually the one that was held together no matter what. Slowly and steadily, Liz breathed and said. “Can you come to the hospital as soon as you can?” I didn’t say anything. I was about an hour away but even if I did make it, what good would that do for Uncle Henry? Sensing my hesitation, Liz went on. “I mean, you know I’ve always assumed the worst. I just need someone to keep me company. If you can’t come, that’s okay.”

I wanted to object and say I have finals but my aunt sounded so distraught and terrified. I couldn’t say no. “No, no, I’ll be right here. See you in a little bit.”

A few hours later, I pulled my Ford into the upper level of the hospital’s parking garage. I then rode the elevator up to the fourth floor where Liz was waiting anxiously for me. She almost let out a sigh of relief when she saw me. She opened her arms, “Come here,” and I went into them automatically. “Thank you so much for coming.”

I smiled, “It’s not a problem. How is Uncle Henry?”

She stepped back and we began walking down the first hallway. “He’s been complaining about his back hurts for the past few days. This morning, I went grocery shopping and when I came back, I found him face-down unconscious on the floor. It scared the daylight out of me.”

“I’m sorry.” I said quietly as we walked into a room. Uncle Henry rested on the remote adjustable bed, an IV tube stuck out of his arm while another plastic tube up his nose. The corners of his mouth tilted in a tiny smile as he saw us walk in.

“Hey, honey, how are you feeling?” Liz asked.

“Like shit.” Uncle Henry replied. His voice was dull and coarse unlike his normal clear chirpy voice. “The doctor told me I’m too late for chemo.”

Liz later explained that Henry has late stages of liver cancer and the doctor has determined that it was inoperable. Even chemotherapy wouldn’t save him. “How can he not know he had cancer?” I asked after we were out of the room. For as long as I’ve known Henry, he was a completely healthy man. Unlike you, he doesn’t drink alcohol, other than an occasional smoke and he ate a strictly healthy diet.

Liz was as shock as me. “I know. The last time he went to the doctor was a month ago and the doctor told him everything was fine.”

Later that week, in the midst of finals, I decided to drive home to pay you a visit. I rang the doorbell to avoid digging through my purse for the keys. You didn’t answer. I rang again, wondered where you were in the middle of the day. You had no job and money and with your car had been repossessed more than six months ago, you were trapped in the house. I sighed and searched for the key at the bottom of my bag. A few minutes later, I stuck the key into the keyhole and turned.

It was like a punch in the face. The overwhelming scent of cigarettes and alcohol wafted through the closed interior of the house. My chest tightened slightly with anger and irritation. You’ve been drinking and smoking again, haven’t you?

I dropped the key back in my purse and passed the foyer into the living room. “Dad? Are you here?” No answer.

I went into your bedroom. Everything was a mess, the sheets were on the floor and it looked as if it hasn’t been cleaned in weeks. I almost gagged at the smell of cigarettes and alcohol. I walked into the family room. Ashes were all over the wooden floor and it was like someone spilled alcohol everywhere. Is this what I get for going off to college? You were doing so well when I left.

I walked into the kitchen and immediately froze. There you were, lying face-down on the floor, a half-drunk beer bottle rested in your open palm. I clapped my hand over my mouth. “Oh my god,” it took me a few minutes to overcome the shock. I reached into my coat pocket for my phone and dialed 911.

When the paramedics arrived a few minutes later, I was so relieved to learn that you were still breathing because as long as you were breathing, there’s hope. The ride to the hospital was both nerve-wrecking and uncomfortable. I sat on the thin bench while you laid on that gurney. The paramedic plagued me with questions about your health history.  It felt like I was being interrogated by the police. My chest pounded crazily because I had no idea about your health during the past four months. How many packs of cigarettes have you gone through? How often did you drink?

We arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later and the paramedic urgently rolled you into the ER while I slowly climbed out of the back of the ambulance. I shoved my shaking hands in my coat pockets and rode the elevator to the fourth floor.

Liz was sitting in my uncle’s room. They held hands and appeared deep in conversation. I knocked and stepped in. She seemed quite surprised to see me. “H-hey, what are you doing here? I thought you were going home.”

I nodded. “Can I talk to you a minute outside, Aunt Liz?” I tilted my head to indicate the direction. Then I turned and stepped back into the hallway. I crossed her arms and began pacing back and forth trying to subdue my panic heart.

A few moments later, Liz stepped into the hall. “What is it?”

“Dad’s drinking again, isn’t he? And smoking?” I inquired. Liz grimaced and then nodded slightly. “I found him collapsed on the kitchen floor. He’s down in the ER right now.”

I rubbed my forehead. If I’d known you would get back to your old habits again, I would have never gone off to live in the dorms. I would have rather commuted every day. This was all my fault and I know it. If mom couldn’t your drinking and smoking, what chance do I have? Why do I even try? Of course, mom eventually chose the easy way out, running away while I was stuck with you, cleaning up your mess.

Liz placed a hand on my shoulder, her eyes softened as if she knew what I was thinking. “It’s not your fault, okay?” Her forehead wrinkled. “It’s not your responsibility to take care of your father.” I glanced at Liz and slowly nodded.

That night, after you were transferred to the fifth floor, I rode the elevator to one floor above. Just as I grabbed the door handle to enter the room, a gray-haired man in lab coat exited the room. “Oh, are you,” he glanced down at the papers in his hand, “Genevieve Bailey?” I nodded. “May I have a word with you about your father?”

My chest tightened. “How is he?” I peeked at his coat, “Doctor Evans.”

He glanced left and then right as if he feared people might overhear us. Then he guided me across the corridor and slowly shook his head. “His liver and lungs are in failing condition.” He flipped through your chart. “You told the paramedic he drank and smoke. How often would you describe this behavior?”

I ran my hand through my hair. A year ago, right after you and mom got divorced, I was left all alone with you. Those first few months, I thought I was living a nightmare and wished I would wake up soon. You were drinking and smoking non-stop. Every morning when I woke up, I would find cigarette buds and beer bottles on the couch, on the floor, everywhere and you would be crashed in an awkward position on your bed. My mind kept debating on the thought of moving out but in the end, I pushed it away because if I did, who would be there to take care of you?

Then one day, as if you finally understood how I felt, you stopped. The house was all of the sudden clean for once, no beer and wine bottles, no cigarette buds anywhere. I asked you what’s going on. You told me, “I know you’ve been unhappy with my drinking and smoking and I know how much you want to go to college.” I looked away. “I saw the brochures. I want you to go.”

“Really?” You smiled and nodded. A part of me feared what would happen if I was gone. Would you go back to your old ways? I called almost every week to check on you. I was happy and relieved that you sounded sober on the phone, no indications of drinking and smoking. In truth, I should have had someone to check on you to make sure.

“I don’t really know.” I answered Doctor Evans. “He quit a few months before I went off to college and since then…” Doctor Evans pulled out a pen and scribbled on the chart. “Will he recover?” I blurted out the single question on my mind.

He glanced across the hallway at your room, “To tell you the truth and I am being as honest as I can, his liver and lungs are on the verge of failure. There’s no fix for what he had done to himself. We’ve tried our best to help but,” he shook his head, “I think the chance for his recovery is very slim. I am sorry.” He gave me a small smile before proceeding down the hallway.

I curled my fists and slumped against the wall onto the floor. A swarm of emotions overcame me as I stared straight ahead. I did not know what I was waiting for, tears? Was it too early or too late to cry? Doctor Evans’ words echoed over and over in my head as if someone had put it on repeat. I think the chance for his recovery is very slim.

Finally, I stood up and crossed the hallway into your room. One look at you makes me want to run out the room and never come back. How could you do this to yourself? To me? Did you think about the consequences when you take that first swig? That first drag? Was it the loneliness? Angry that mom left you? What was it?

I shuffled my tired feet across the room and pulled a chair next to your bed. I plopped down, exhausted, and gazed at you. Tubes poked out of odd places, connected you to the machine that gave the indication that you were still alive. “Why did you have to start doing that stuff again, dad?” I asked out loud.

I lowered my head and closed my eyes. Is it too late to ask for mercy? I wondered. “Please let him recover. Please help him recover.” I repeated those words both in her head and out loud, hoping god would hear my prayer and grant me this one miracle.

Two days later, as I made her way up to see you, Doctor Evans pulled me aside. “I have some bad news.” Bad news? “Early this morning, your father fell into a coma.”

I said nothing. My eyes just widened as I stared at him. Then I sort of blurted out as he slowly retreated. “How long does he have?”

Doctor Evans sighed, “I wish I could tell you.”

I nodded and thanked him. Then I made my way down the hallway to your room. I stood there and gazed at you for a few minutes like an artist studying their muse. You looked peaceful like someone taking a long deep sleep. I sat down, held your hand and stared up at the machine. You heart continued to beat slowly but steadily. A thought crossed my mind. Maybe you were waiting on something or someone to wake you. A soft knock on the door interrupted that thought. “How is he?” Liz stepped in.

“He’s in a coma. The doctor told me.”

“Can I talk to you, outside? Just for a minute?”

I looked at Liz, “Do I have to?” I didn’t want to leave your side. I wanted to spend whatever moment’s left by your side but Liz had that look on her face that pleaded my attention. Reluctantly, I walked out the room. “Is there something wrong with Uncle Henry?” I asked.

“Ronny, he’s dead.” Liz blurted out.

I blinked. “Aunt Jade’s boyfriend Ronny?” She nodded. How can this happen? He was well on his way to recovery a few months ago after the discovery of his stomach cancer. “What happened?” What changed?

“He’s gotten weak lately and I guess he didn’t recover. The furnace broke and the house got a little cold.” She couldn’t go on. “Jade is distraught. They’ve been together for 20 years.”

“I’m sorry,” was all I could say. Exactly what happened to this family in the last four months? In less than two weeks, I have lost one family member while on the verge of losing two more. Is this because I left for a few short months to pursue the thing I wanted?

I gasped as the thorn of a red rose dug into my palm, bringing me back to the present. Liz peeked at me behind her black veil. Aunt Jade, Liz, and I were standing in front of three beautifully crafted caskets. I looked down at your casket, willing your last words to her mind. “I’m ready.” You had shouted crazily before every indicator on the machine turned red and beeped wildly. A group of nurses rushed in and tried to resuscitate you, pushing me toward the door. In the end, they failed.

On both sides of me, Liz and Jade gently placed a dark red rose on Henry and Ronny’s caskets. Uncle Henry had gone shortly after you. He went peacefully, holding onto Liz’s hand until the very last second. I sighed and gently placed my rose on your casket and watched you sink into the ground. After all this time, I was still waiting for tears or maybe I was waiting for something else. I may never know. All I know is my life will never be the same again.
