What do you see # 123 – Picture Day

She never liked Picture Day at school. It’s been the day when her mother made her put on all sort of wacky costumes. “It’s for the sake of the memory,” her mother would say when the day came and she whined about the ridiculousness of the costume.
“Why can’t I have a stinkin’ life?” She muttered as she walked home the day before this year’s Picture Day. “If I did have a life, I can stay with friends for the night and I won’t be forced into mom’s costume each year.”
She remembered the previous year when her mother made her wear an 18th Century dress and carry a giant protractor and triangle so everyone would know she’s in the geeky Math Club. She shuttered at the thought.
She stopped walking before realizing she was in front of her home, her hands clenched in fists. “This year, I will stand up for myself. No more ridiculous costumes. No more picture memories.”

Emily tugs at her father’s shirt, “Daddy, who are you looking for?”
Her father smiles and picks her up, “Hey sweets, I was looking for you, who else? Did you enjoy story time with Ms. Rose?”
“Sure did, daddy.” Emily says then whispers, “Ms. Rose is over there, in case you’re wondering.” She winks.
He gives his daughter a look and wonders. How did my little girl come to know me so well? Before he can ponder further, Miss Rose strides over, “Hi,” she says.
“Uh hi.” He stutters. “I, I…”
“Daddy’s wondering if you wanna have coffee with him.”

Friday Fictioneers: Puzzled by Fascination
“Aren’t these wonderful? Wow!” Her daughter bends over to examine the paintings in awe.
She says nothing. The truth is, she’s miserable. What am I doing here? She keeps asking herself. Why is my daughter so interested in this stuff. She’s not an artist. She can’t draw to save her life.
She’s trying to spend time with you, you idiot. Another voice speaks in her mind. Smile, don’t be a sour-puss.
Reluctantly, she forces the corner of her lips to curl upward as she follows her daughter to the man at the table. She’s so fascinated by this stuff, why?
